| How to pick a jazz guitar teacher Picking out a jazz guitar teacher is a very personal decision. You first need to find someone you like being around since you will be studying with them once a week. You must respect the teacher’s abilities as a player and as an educator. Particularly for jazz guitar, you need a teacher that can play jazz guitar on a professional level. The teacher must be able to play jazz standards with advanced chords and must be able to improvise professional level solos. Most jazz guitar teachers have a music degree from a reputable music college or have equivalent experience from private lessons. Be careful! Few guitarists in our area are able to teach jazz at an appropriate level. Go watch the prospective teacher play live to see if they play the way you want to learn to play. On clue can be to look at their equipment. Do they have a jazz guitar like an electric arch top? On this page we have recommended a few teachers we know meet our high standards.

All
ages beginner through advanced.
I began guitar at age 6 and Jazz studies at age 18 in Portland Oregon.
Having studied with numerous artist including Harry Gillgham, Mike Davis, Joe
Pass, Dave Storrs, Gary Winslow and others, I began teaching privately in 1974
and have many successful performing students. I have worked in various solo and
group venues numbering over 2000 gigs requiring Jazz, Funk, Rock, Big Band,
Country, Folk, Ethnic and Improvisational skills. My core objective in teaching
music is the student's equal development of technique, knowledge and performance
with emphasis on listening and rhythmic skills. I have developed an effective
concise teaching plan over the years that works well for most students of all
ages and levels of skill. However, I am flexible and always ready for new ideas
and approaches to learning.

(BA Music Theory/Compsition from CWU 1985)
I have experience in various genres such as reggae, rhythm & blues, rock & jazz
and have led and played in many ensembles in Western, Central & Eastern
Washington and Idaho since 1982, most notably the Horndogs in Seattle, Soul
Proprietor in Spokane and most recently, Schauer With Friends since 1997. I
have been fortunate to have performed with such greats as Paquito D'Rivera, Don
Lanphere, Bruce Babad, Reuel Lubag, Joe Johanson, Carmen Bradford, Andy Roth,
Chris Speed, Andrew D'Angelo, Marcus Duke, the Coasters, the Platters, & the
Shangri-La's.
I have taught guitar on and off since 1982. I prefer to teach existing
guitarists who wish to learn theory and improvisation. I have a studio in my
home on the south hill.
All
ages beginner through advanced.
I picked up the guitar at age 7 in the tri-cities. By
the time I was in high school, I was studying with local guitar legend John
LaChapelle. I am studying Jazz at Eastern Washington University, and have
taught privately for the last 6 years. I have had the opportunity to
perform with saxophonist Rich Perry, Pianist Matt Harris, John Stowell, and
a number of other professional players during my time at EWU, performing
around the Pacific Northwest and Canada. I have also been the guitar chair
for the Bob Curnow Big Band the last 4 years, and have performed with them
at Jazz Festivals and clubs in the area. I am flexible and willing to work
with the student to help them make as much progress as they can. Willing to
take all ages, all levels.
